Wait – The Luxury Cruise Costs Less Than the Premium Line?

Why It Pays to Look Beyond the Obvious Choice

We tend to assume that moving from a premium cruise line into luxury means spending more. But I recently came across an example where that simply wasn't true.

I was researching an itinerary for a client interested in sailing in The Retreat aboard Celebrity Xcel. When I saw the price, I became curious. What would happen if I stopped comparing Celebrity with other premium cruise options and instead looked one category higher?

That's when I checked Explora Journeys.

Explora is positioned firmly within the luxury cruise market, and its entry-level accommodations are all oceanfront suites. Yet for two similar 11-night sailings departing Barcelona on the same date, Explora came in thousands of dollars less.

Suddenly, the question wasn't simply which cruise cost less. It was: Which experience actually made more sense for my client?

The Price Comparison

Both cruises depart Barcelona on October 18, 2027, for 11 nights, with itineraries visiting Spain, Morocco and Portugal. While no two cruise itineraries or ships are exactly alike, these two sailings provided an interesting opportunity to compare a premium cruise line's suite experience with a cruise line positioned firmly in the luxury market.

For two guests, the Celebrity Xcel Suite Guarantee in The Retreat was priced at $18,357.52, including $850 in onboard credit.

An Ocean Suite aboard EXPLORA I was priced at $13,440 for two guests.

That's a difference of $4,917.52 in cruise fare, with Explora costing less.

Even if you consider Celebrity's $850 onboard credit, the difference remains more than $4,000.

Cruise fares are dynamic and can change at any time. These prices reflect the fares available when I researched these sailings and are intended as a real-world example, not an indication that one cruise line will always cost more or less than another.

The Celebrity Retreat: Luxury Within a Larger Resort Experience

Celebrity's Retreat takes a “ship within a ship” approach. Guests have access to exclusive suite spaces and elevated service while retaining all the advantages of sailing aboard a larger, resort-style ship.

That distinction matters.

A Retreat guest can enjoy a quieter and more exclusive environment while still stepping outside of it for Celebrity's larger entertainment venues, extensive dining choices, bars and lounges, nightlife, and other activities.

Retreat fares also bundle several amenities that would otherwise add to the cruise cost, including a premium beverage package, Wi-Fi, and access to Luminae, Celebrity's dedicated restaurant for Retreat guests.

For travelers who enjoy the energy and variety of a larger ship but want a more exclusive place to retreat, it's an appealing combination.

Explora Journeys: Luxury From the Ground Up

Explora Journeys approaches the experience differently.

Rather than creating an exclusive enclave within a larger ship, the entire ship is designed around a luxury experience.

The ships are considerably smaller, with an understated European atmosphere, expansive ocean-facing public spaces, and accommodations that Explora refers to as suites rather than traditional cruise cabins.

The fare is also considerably more inclusive. It includes beverages, most dining venues, Wi-Fi for multiple devices, and onboard gratuities, among other amenities.

But perhaps the biggest difference isn't something you'll find on an inclusions list.

It's the atmosphere.

Explora is intentionally quieter and less structured than a large resort-style cruise ship. Depending on the traveler, that can either be exactly what they're looking for — or not enough.

Two Very Different Ways to Cruise

Price alone shouldn't determine which cruise is the better choice. Despite some similarities in accommodations and amenities, the onboard experiences differ significantly.

Celebrity Xcel is the larger and livelier of the two. Guests can expect large-scale production shows, DJs, numerous bars and restaurants, organized activities, and the energy that naturally comes with a larger ship. Retreat guests can participate in all of that while having their own dedicated spaces to return to.

Explora takes a much more understated approach.

Rather than one large production dominating the evening, entertainment is spread throughout the ship. You might encounter jazz in one lounge, a pianist or violinist elsewhere, or contemporary music playing in another space. Its theatre experience is more intimate, with cabaret-style performances and vocalists rather than enormous production shows.

The difference continues during the day. Explora tends toward destination-focused programming, tastings, art, wellness and relaxation rather than a packed schedule of traditional cruise activities.

Neither approach is inherently better.

Someone who loves the energy of a large ship, big entertainment, and having seemingly endless choices may find Explora too subdued. Someone who values quieter spaces, fewer crowds, relaxed evenings and conversation over a drink may find the larger-ship experience unnecessary.

And that's why the cheaper cruise isn't automatically the better value — but neither is the more expensive one.

So Why Did the Luxury Cruise Cost Less?

Cruise pricing doesn't always follow the categories we use to describe cruise lines.

Demand, promotions, available inventory, cabin category, sailing date, and other factors can all affect the price of an individual sailing. As a result, moving from a premium cruise line into the luxury category doesn't necessarily mean the price will move in the same direction.

That's why I think it's important to look beyond the category a traveler initially has in mind.

If I had stopped my search at “Celebrity Retreat,” I never would have discovered the Explora option.

That doesn't mean Explora automatically became the right choice. It meant my client now had another option worth considering — one offering a very different experience at a substantially lower price.

And ultimately, that's the more useful comparison.

Not simply, “Which cruise costs less?”

But rather, “Which experience best fits the way you want to travel — and what are you actually getting for your money?”

Sometimes the answer will be the premium suite.

Sometimes it will be the luxury cruise.

And sometimes, surprisingly, the luxury cruise costs less.
